Adobe Business Catalyst Partner

Why Use Adobe?

E-Strands started out developing websites using open source content management platforms such as Joomla and WordPress. In August, 2011 we became Adobe Business Catalyst partners.
Business Catalyst (hereinafter BC) is a hosted “software as a service” package, allowing us to design and deliver business websites that offer 5+ systems, including:
  • Content Management System (CMS)
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
  • Modules (news, forum, blogs)
  • Email marketing
  • eCommerce
  • Email Accounts
  • Comprehensive Reporting

Web Portal and CRM (Content Management System)

Business Catalyst features a fully integrated content management system, providing two methods of maintaining pages: in-site context editing; and using page templates, pages and menus.

In-site editing allows editors the ability to navigate through the site and amend site content in situ. An option to publish or save as draft is made available. Using the admin area, editors can add/ edit/ remove pages and menu entries.

In addition, the editor has the ability to set extra options for a page, such as: SEO page title; description; keywords; enable/ disable; release; expiry dates. BC pages can use page templates that can be designed from a ‘blank canvas’ allowing for freedom to match any branding, plus flexibility to adhere to W3C current trends.

If necessary, BC includes for each page template an alternative for tablet or mobile. In addition, with customisable templates and styling, full support is available for creating adaptive and responsive websites. Websites built on BC can make use of integrated modules for news, blogs, forums, and FAQs. BC pages can be saved in draft and a workflow applied.

Whenever a page is amended, members of the assigned workflow are notified and must approve the changes. In addition to draft creation, BC offers a 90-day archive and rollback facility for any page content. BC has built an indexing system for site searches, allowing for all elements to be searched and listed in search results. This allows for a simple keyword search to list pages, blog posts, news, web app list entries and more. BC pages can use page templates that can be designed from a ‘blank canvas’ allowing for freedom to match any branding, plus flexibility to adhere to W3C current trends.

Interactive mapping facility

Out of the box; Business Catalyst has a feature, “Web Apps”, which has the following attributes.

  • It can be configured to represent lists of ‘anything’ (e.g. jobs, staff, shops)
  • Each entry in a list can have geographical address details stored, and using its postcode can be plotted onto a Google map.
  • Lists can be made searchable via customisable forms.

An example of this functionality can be seen at: http://www.nyyforum.org.uk/nyyf-listings/community-development.

Secure Zones

Business Catalyst allows creation of ‘secure zones’ with username/ password security. Once created, multiple elements (e.g. pages, downloads) of a BC website can be assigned to a secure zone.

Using this feature, a secure login area can established for Digital Champions to access information, resource tools and share experiences. The secure area could include things such as secure pages, documents, news, blog and forum.

This is comparable to the charity subscription facility on NYYForum (www.nyyforum.org.uk). We allow charities, via a secure zone, the ability to submit a comprehensive form (broken into tabs) containing their organisation details, events, latest projects, related documents and gallery images. They can log in and amend their entry at any time, while at the same time internal staff have access to their record via BC admin.

Portal with CRM capabilities

Using Business Catalyst’s “secure zones” and “web app” entries, a suitable portal could be built with the following functionality.

  • Capture SME details in the CRM, including username/ password for a secure zone.
  • Secure Zone Usage Report shows date when a person has logged.
  • For ERDF requirements, additional reporting can be collated either through BC internal reports or through exporting to Excel of web app records.
  • SME members of the secure zone, once logged in, can Submit and amend learning material in the form of “Web App” items in a list.
  • Access secure downloads, pages, blogs and forums.
  • Access their learning record; this could take the form of an entry in a “web app” list, whose fields (e.g. textboxes, dropdowns).
  • Have a personalised homepage for the secure zone; this could be achieved using a web app record that contains site settings for an SME.

Social Media Integration friendly

BC fully supports 3rd party JavaScript integration; allowing for inclusion of embedded feeds from channels such as Twitter and YouTube. Websites can include coding for ShareThis or AddThis links to enable sharing and promotion of pages to popular social media platforms.
